Heroes
I’m sitting on my fat ass here on Earth while Perseverance and Curiosity, the Mars rovers, crawl their way across a deadly desert, measuring, recording, transmitting, day by day, no complaints although they are certainly doomed. As I frisk the couch for the remote, I’m thinking about heroes, about how long it will be before machines are recognized as such, given grand awards for their brutal sacrifices, but mostly I’m wishing I had one now to bring me a beer.

According to an article in the journal Cell, as little as thirty percent of the cells that comprise Columbus, Ohio author Tom Barlow are human. The rest are primarily bacteria, fungi, protozoa and archaea, all playing their part in keeping the colony called Tom functioning. They all deserve a share of the credit (or blame) for his poetry. tombarlowauthor.com
