we sit – on stairs, on floors, on grass
we sit – with each other, talking fast
we stare – at cute girls with dyed hair
we stare – as summers pass

we talk – words taste sassafras
we talk – crying, laughing en masse
years end – we can't wait to leave
years end –  we might not meet again, senior class











Desi Burns (they/them) is a sophomore at the Kinder High School for Performing and Visual Arts in Houston, Texas, USA. They are a Cuban-American poet, new in the performative poetry scene of Houston, and have performed multiple times across recent years. Their poetry focuses on absurdist and surrealist depictions of abstract topics, as well as covering social justice issues, most often regarding growing up as a queer youth and current world events.
