Hurry

I walk quickly in the fading light
because she’s waiting for me, patient
in the passenger seat of the chilly car,
my tired mother who’s peering at the geese
she sees as swans. I circle the pond
that’s already frozen around the edges.
Peace seeps into the woods. Only
a jay crying the nearness of winter
this Sunday in the Watchung Mountains.
