Valentine
Anyway, today as I came out of an unfamiliar older dollar store without electric entrance with my bag of chocolate chips – some consolation for lovelessness – I held the door for an older woman, her frail (myself in the near future), waiting with her empty cart to enter, and she thanked me. “Happy Valentine’s Day!” she offered. I said back, “Happy Valentine’s Day!” In passing, old strangers are each other’s valentine. Love! We are all connected, etc. Love, like in an NDE.
Merry Speece has published two chapbooks of poetry and been a recipient of a state arts commission fellowship in prose. Her Sisters Grimke Book of Days(Oasis Books, England), which one reviewer called a prose poem, is a mixed-genre work of fragmented historical scholarship.
