Holly Simonsen works under the thesis that ecologically disrupted sites offer access points to experience language as a product of the earth. Her poems can be found in Hayden’s Ferry Review, Ecotone, Cutbank, and elsewhere. She was a recent fellow at the Vermont Studio Center and at the Djerassi Resident Artists’ Program. “Topped” uses a page from the book, This Was Logging! by Ralph W. Andrews and was made using char from the actual remains of redwood trees that were clear cut over a hundred years ago in the Santa Cruz Mountains near San Francisco, CA.
