Friday Afternoons

Mother laughed often
when her hairdresser
stood behind her
at our kitchen table
arranging her hair,
and spraying it
while smoking –
flicking ashes into a shot glass
between her voluptuous breasts –
talking at a speed
difficult to understand,
which was probably best.
Mother said she was colorful;
I called her educational.
