Brewing Chai

4:30 a.m. wants warmer hands
and something definite to do. Ritual’s
16-ounce ceramic, Twinings
vanilla tea bag, sweet single creamer.

Does the microwave burn water?
7 not-quite-precise steeping
minutes by my silent Braille watch or
exact sound from the smart speaker.

Stir, inhale, sip the hue
suspecting I’m getting closer
to the illusive color of
perfection I can’t see.

Nancy Scott's over 925 essays and poems have recently appeared in, among others, Black Fox Literary Magazine, Braille Forum, Chrysanthemum, Kaleidoscope, The Mighty, One Sentence Poems, Shark Reef, Wordgathering, and Yahoo News.
